Our birdroom consists of 20 All-Wire breeding cages for easy cleaning. They measure 24''x 19''x 20'' and fitted with square perches and fixed so as to have no movement whatsoever so as to give the pair together more likelihood for a successful mating. We keep a few a specially made baby flight for the youngsters during the transitition to the flights.
Lighting within the room is given by three Full spectrum lights each 4 ft long,Two in the birdroom and one in the adjoining flight.A night light of low wattage is left on all night during the breeding season, so youngsters in the nest can be fed by the parents. The main lighting within the room is on a timer.Coming on at 7am and going off at 10.45pm.
Air filtering is done by a system we bought that takes in the air, cleans it then returns it to the room.95% of dust is extracted from the room with this method. As with all rooms a constant watch must be kept to the cleanliness. Also recently we tried a power steam cleaner which we now find invaluable for sanitising nest boxes etc.
The use of an industrial high powered cleaner is used to lift most of the feathers during the moulting period.Within the flights we use a sanitised wood chipping which we find is very useful for the floors of the flights. The cages are cleaned every week and the plastic trays disinfected, wiped and a fresh layer of newspaper purt in for cleanliness.A special thanks to our very good friend Barry Lloydd of BTB1 Budgerigars whom we acquired the all-wire system,Many thanks Barry.
Special mention to anyone new coming into the hobby. After buying you initial stock, the birds become a magnet to those with a jealous mental state. So make sure to spend that little bit extra on your CCTV and security as to protect your investment, as everyone is'nt what they may seem.believe me!!!
With our new set-up we have also moved to get fitness in the stock, so we have a 14ft x 5ft outside flight to build muscle tone and general health. As with everything within the hobby, fanciers have different views on the use of the outside flights, but naturally its a personal choice thing, and it will be given a try.
For this season 2009/2010 we are incorporating uv lighting within the birdroom, to provide vitamin D for our stock. Which is essential for their wellbeing.
February 2010 and we've made a couple of adjustments to our birdroom. As stated above , we've changed our lighting to full spectrum lighting with timers to regulate the changing over to nightlight at this very crucial part of the year, the breeding season. We've taken down our baby flight, as on a hygiene level, it had become difficult to keep clean, and have now opted for 3 holding all-wire cages and a mobile baby flight which is in sync with the rest of the room.
Again, new to the room is the use of water fonts as used for mice, hamsters etc, as we felt that softfood from the parents feeding ,was getting into the commonly used water fountains. To date , it has been a good idea.
Fingers crossed for some quality babys to fill them!!!!
